Obituary

Walter Deaton Pelfrey, 87, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026, in Columbia City, Indiana. Walt was born in Breathitt County, Kentucky to the late Samuel and Kizzie Pelfrey.

Walter was an extremely humble and gentle soul. Walt was a proud Navy veteran and former Whitley County Deputy Sheriff. He was a longtime member of the American Legion along with the Masonic Lodge for 50 years. He loved not only spectating, but participating in drag races at the Avilla Drag Strip. Walt was an accomplished mechanic and could fix almost anything. He had a sweet tooth and always enjoyed some desert.

Beyond all his accomplishments and hobbies, Walt was a man who deeply loved his family. He poured his heart out to his wife of 52 years, Mary Lou. They enjoyed their time together being outdoors, camping with friends. Everybody loved Walt. He made a strong positive impact on many people, including his many nieces and nephews who adored their uncle. His friends and family will miss Walt's gentle and kind heart.

Walter is survived by his children, Chip, Debbie, Dale, Shelly, and Guy; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou, and several brothers and a sister.
