Obituary

Virginia Ann Doenges, 89, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 20, 2024. Ginny, as she was known to her friends, was born June 26, 1934, in Toronto, Ontario. She was the only child of Rev. Edwin and Virginia Leverenz. Moving from Toronto to Hattiesburg, MS at age 7, was the start of many family moves, brought about through her father's decision to pursue a career in the US Army. Laughingly, she recalled that her new teacher said she "Just couldn't understand lil' Virginia's accent." These many moves, in her youth and young adulthood shaped her life. Ginny lived in many states, from New York to California; she attended three high schools in her junior year. She also lived in Panama and Japan. As her father was sent to Germany, Ginny and her mother stayed in Fort Wayne, where she met Edward Doenges, a young pharmacist. Ginny and Ed were married in 1957. They were happy to plant their roots in Fort Wayne, IN, and stay in one place to raise their family. Ginny formed deep-rooted friendships there that she treasured until the end. Ginny was a stay-at-home Mom and later worked as a teachers' aid and as a gift buyer for Chronister Pharmacies. She loved the gift buying trips to McCormick Place, in Chicago. She and Ed enjoyed spending their empty nest years in Winona Lake, IN and in Rotonda West, FL. These locations provided for memorable family get-togethers. Ginny and Ed shared 65 years of marriage before Ed preceded her in death, October 5, 2022. Ginny is survived by her sons David (Amy), of Osceola, IN, Daniel (Karen), of Chaska, MN, and Joseph (Mitzi), of St. Clair, MI, plus seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Ginny's tell-it-like-it-is personality won the hearts of those taking care of her at Riley Crossing Memory Care and previous to that, All Saints Senior Living. She believed in us "boys" and instilled confidence in us to be successful in meeting life's challenges. Dan tells of the times, near the end, where her love was repeatedly demonstrated by her holding his Minnesota-cold hands insisting that she warm them up. Service is 11 am, Saturday, January 27, 2024 at FairHaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton Street, with calling one hour prior. Burial will follow at Concordia Cemetery Gardens. Memorials may be made to Brighton Hospice, 4500 Park Glen Road Suite 475, St. Louis Park, MN 55416.
