Obituary

Steven Myron Jones passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Frederick, Oklahoma, Steven was the son of the late Willard and Jeanne (Shookman) Jones.
Steven graduated from South Side High School and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Bowling Green University. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta and was on their wrestling team. Following his graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War. Possessing a brilliant and analytical mind, Steven thoughtfully considered the impact of his service and volunteered for a second tour in Vietnam, believing his willingness to serve again might spare another from being sent to war—an act that reflected his deep sense of compassion and selflessness.
After returning home, Steven felt called to serve his community through medicine. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Indiana University and devoted his professional life to advancing healthcare in Fort Wayne. Steven served as Director of the Lutheran Hospital Laboratory for 30 years, where his leadership and vision left a lasting impact. During his tenure, he played a critical role in bringing heart transplant services to Fort Wayne and was instrumental in the establishment of a Tumor Board, fostering collaborative discussion among physicians to improve cancer treatment options and outcomes for patients within the community.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Steven was a man of extraordinary intellect and creativity. He had a keen aptitude for languages, a love of poetry, and expressed himself artistically through abstract painting. He was an avid traveler who delighted in exploring cultures around the world, with a particular fondness for Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the beauty of the American Southwest, a love he shared with his wife, Victoria.
Steven cherished nature and the outdoors. He loved growing up on Clear Lake, water skiing, and tackling black diamond slopes while snow skiing. Known for his sharp wit and mastery of puns, Steven brought laughter wherever he went. His humor, generosity, kindness, and unfailingly positive spirit were hallmarks of his character. Many remember his warm greeting—“How you doing? Better now that you’re here.”
Steven was deeply passionate about life and, above all, his family. A devoted husband, father, and family man, he treasured time spent with those he loved. He was known for giving the longest—and best—toasts, often enjoyed with a glass of champagne or a margarita, celebrating life and the people around him with joy and sincerity.
Steven Myron Jones will be remembered for his brilliant mind, generous heart, unwavering service to others, and the profound love he had for his family and community. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, both personally and professionally. Surviving are his wife, Victoria Jones; Megan (Daniel) Tucker, Christoper (Megan) Wilson, Matthew (Laura) Jones, Benjamin (Alysha) Jones, and Cory (Ryne) Winger; grandchildren, Aiden, Ellis, Dorthy, Emilia, Kinsley, Anna, Chance, Aaliyah; brother, Judge Mark (Ruthie) Jones; and sister, Babs (Tom) Merkert. Private Family Services will be held in honor of Steven. Memorials may be made donorschoose.org.
