Obituary

Robert Orville "Bob" McCarthy, 86, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025. Born on April 13, 1939, in Syracuse, New York, Bob lived a life defined by curiosity, kindness, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Bob earned his bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Physics from Indiana Tech, a foundation that supported his lifelong passion for science and learning.  Bob was an avid writer throughout the years and had even published his own book. He dedicated many years of his life to teaching, sharing his knowledge with students at Ivy Tech, ITT Tech, and other institutions across Arizona. As a teacher, he inspired countless students with his enthusiasm for science, mathematics, and discovery.

Outside the classroom, Bob was an avid hiker and lover of the outdoors. He found joy and peace in nature, spending countless hours exploring trails, studying fossils and minerals, and gazing at the stars. In Fort Wayne, he volunteered regularly at Matea Park and Fox Island, where he often led hiking tours and shared his knowledge of the trails and nature around the area.

His interests in space, astronomy, rocks, and the intricacies of the natural world were not just hobbies—they were reflections of a lifelong wonder and reverence for the universe. He loved to learn, and even more, he loved to share what he learned with others.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Bernice "Bea" McCarthy; sons, Douglas McCarthy, Kevin McCarthy; grandchildren, Ryan (Ashley) McCarthy, Jason McCarthy, Alex McCarthy; great-granddaughters, Maylee, Morah McCarthy with one more granddaughter on the way; along with a longtime family friend, Kelly Pierce.  Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Kathryn McCarthy; and brothers, Donald "Dick" McCarthy and David McCarthy.

A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at Metea Park, 8401 Union Chapel Road, on Saturday, September 6, 2025 from 11 am till 5 pm.  Memorials may be made to Allen County Parks.

Bob's footprints remain not only on the trails he walked, but in the lives of those he touched. He will be deeply missed.
