Obituary

Robert "Nick" L. Sweet, age 69, passed away March 1, 2026 in Columbia City, IN. He was born in Fort Wayne to the late G. Robert and Barbara Sweet. Nick was a man whose life was defined by devotion, especially to his family. He proudly served his country as a member of the US Navy. Nick worked tirelessly as a truck driver, often seven days a week, not because he had to prove anything, but because providing for those he loved was his greatest pride. Even after long days, he always made time for the simple things that brought him joy, especially settling in to watch NASCAR races. He would sit there, cheering on Dale Earnhardt as if he were part of the pit crew himself.

When Nick wasn't working or watching races, he found peace outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing, and took pride in woodworking, creating with his hands the same way he built his life: steady, patient, and strong.

Nick was the undisputed king of dad jokes. If you saw him coming, you knew two things were certain: a joke and a Werther's Original. He had a way of making people smile when they needed it most.

He shared an especially close bond with his siblings and stepped naturally into the role of a second father to the nieces and nephews. His guidance, humor, and steady presence shaped more lives than he likely ever realized.

What made Nick happiest was simple, making others happy. That was the measure of his heart. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of loving him.

Nick is survived by his children, Chadwick, Robert, and Sara; ex-wife, Kimberlin; 15 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sisters, Karen (Jim) Platt, Peggy Yost, Jeanne Warner, and Gayelynne Richards; brother, Charles (Teena) Sweet.

He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Roberta Rathel and Michelle Sweet.

Service is 3:00 pm, Friday, March 6, 2026, at Fairhaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton St. with calling two hours prior, beginning at 1:00 pm. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Fort Wayne Community Fish Club, 2828 E. Pontiac St., Fort Wayne, IN 46803. To sign the online guestbook, go to www.fairhavenfortwayne.com
