Obituary

Robert Allen Kaplan (Bob), born December 18, 1930, in Plymouth, Indiana, peacefully passed away in his Orland, Indiana home on January 12, 2024, at the age of ninety-three.

A proud veteran of the Korean War, Bob served with distinction in the United States Navy Submarine Service. Initially assigned to the USS Carbonero, he later transferred to the USS Charr. As Torpedoman's Mate 3rd Class Ordinanceman stationed in the Forward Torpedo Room, he had memorable experiences, including the dinner with Generalissimo Chaing-Kai-shek, where his quick thinking and generosity with a set of pearl-inlaid chopsticks saved the day.

Honorably discharged on St. Patty's Day, March 17, 1955, Bob received the National Service Medal, marking the end of his military service.

Post-Navy, he pursued Tool and Die studies in South Bend, Indiana. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, a beautiful woman from Michigan City named Norma Jean, whom he married on January 4, 1958. Settling in Chicago, they started a family, and Bob began his illustrious career in the fuel oil industry.

Bob's contributions to the industry were revolutionary, earning him several patents, including one for a groundbreaking burner design to improve efficiency. This innovation propelled him to positions like Vice President of Engineering at the Automatic Burner Corporation and later as Executive Vice President and General Manager at Wayne Home Equipment. His leadership led to the development of products such as the "Blue
Angel" burner series and countless commercial gas designs, including one that helped propel a pizza chain to national prominence.

Recognized globally for his expertise, Bob established his consulting company in 1986, Robert A. Kaplan Inc., which continues to serve the industry worldwide under the leadership of his son Mark Allen Kaplan.

In his personal life, Bob was a force of joy and camaraderie. Whether building an ice skating rink in his backyard every winter or hosting grand barbeques in the summer, he brought people together. A lover of sports, he was a devoted fan of Notre Dame football, the Chicago Bears, and the Chicago White Sox, attending the World Series in 1958.

Bob's legacy extends beyond his professional achievements. He was an avid fisherman, card shark, and horseracing aficionado. He imparted his love for these pursuits to his children and grandchildren, leaving an indelible mark.

Survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Norma Jean Kaplan, children, Kathy Koultourides [George], Linda Shank [Leonard], Deborah Beck [Bradford], Mark Allen Kaplan, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and nine adoring nieces and nephews. Bob's memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
