Robert (Bob) Jones, 89, passed away May 26, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 2, 1934, in Peru, Indiana to Orville and Vivian Jones.
After graduating with a journalism degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, Bob served in the US Army from February 1957 to February 1959 where he was stationed at Fort Polk Louisiana. Bob then held marketing and public relations positions for WOWO and WGL radio stations, the Job Corps in Bloomington, Indiana, Magnavox Corporation in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne Bible College, and finally Lincoln National Corporation here in Fort Wayne. While at the radio stations, Bob would sometimes fill-in on air, as he had a deep voice that was perfect for the radio. Bob made lifelong friendships wherever he worked, he also developed a friendship with baseball player Hank Aaron during a publicity tour he arranged for Magnavox Corp.
Bob, so enjoyed reading and watching IU sports. He especially loved playing golf with his special buddies. After retirement, Bob also was a marketing consultant for the Lincoln Museum until it closed.
Throughout life, Bob's passion was for his family and his strong Christian faith. He served his community and church in so many ways. Bob was an active member of Maplewood Mennonite church serving in many different capacities. He also volunteered his time to many community service organizations such as the Central Lions Cub, Three Rivers Literacy Alliance, (past President), Indiana University Alumni Association, Bible study Fellowship, Matthew 25 (front desk greeter), Meals on Wheels (driver), and a reader for Radio Reading Service for the blind.
Spending time with his family was the highlight of his life. Family gatherings were filled with fun and joy, especially when the grandchildren and great grandchildren visited.
Bob touched so many lives with his caring heart, warm smile, gentle nature, kind words and sense of humor. He left an unfillable hole in our hearts.
Bob is survived by his loving wife Linda, as well as his sons Douglas of Columbia City, Todd (Ruth) of Fort Wayne, Linda Lou Rau (Mark) of South Amherst, Ohio, stepson David Field (Mindy) of Fort Wayne, brothers Tom and Jim Jones, sister Sue Poland (Ron), and brother-in-law Bob Hinton (Nancy) of Arlington, VA. He is also blessed with eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his first wife Gwendolyn Marie (Hinton Jones), and his brother Phil Jones, and daughter-in-law, Beth Whitehead Jones.
The family is grateful for the loving care Bob received at Heritage Point Fort Wayne.
Funeral services for Bob will take place on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at Maplewood Mennonite Church, 4129 Maplecrest Road, at 11 am with visitation beginning at 9:30 am. Burial in Yaggy Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Maplewood Mennonite Church or Matthew 25.
