Obituary

Richard Gorney, age 69, peacefully left this earthly world, to finally be free, on Sunday evening, July 20, 2025 from the Life Care Center in Fort Wayne, IN.  He was born  on June 13, 1956 to Frank and Dorothy (Sroka) Gorney, in Wheeling, IL, where he was raised and graduated.  He was born with cerebral palsy and due to the severity of his condition, not expected to live more than 6 months. He spent the rest of his 69 year life defying those odds…

During his adulthood, he resided in Berne and Decatur, IN. He was an avid car enthusiast and a classic model muscle car collector.  His favorite car being the Plymouth Road Runner.  His favorite daily pastime was to ride his bike across town to McDonald's for coffee and scope out each car lot along 13th Street.  He knew all the car dealers and harassed them regularly until he had an accident with a Fed Ex truck and couldn't ride his bike anymore. He was ultimately moved to a long term care facility in 2018 after suffering a stroke at age 62 and amused the staff with his quirky personality and amazing music trivia skills. He experienced a few more birthday parties with friends and family, celebrated great nieces and nephews graduating, and always knew what vehicle we each would (or should) get next…

Richard had many friends, including lifelong companion Jeanie Becker. They have called each other Archie and Edith since the 1970's. He has one surviving sister Alice (Tim) Vannette, in Decatur IN, and was proceeded to the Heavens by his brothers Michael (of Wheeling, IL) and "Eddie" (in Kenosha, WI) Gorney and his sister "Rosemary" Wittgenfeld (in Berne, IN).  His other surviving relatives include nieces Lorrie and Chantel (Biery) Wittgenfeld, Heather and Jason (Amy) Gorney, Cassie and Beth Vannette, and Bruce and Susan (Edelstein) Gorney. He has 6 great nieces and 8 great nephews, 2 great-great nieces and 4 great-great nephews, which he referred to as the "Darlins".

There will be a celebration of Richard's life on Sunday, July 27 2025, 11-3 at the American Legion "Cannonball" Park in Decatur, IN. for anyone who wants to share in some good stories about our beloved "Uncle Richie".  Eulogy at 1:00pm with a trip to the cemetery following this event.  Contributions would be appreciated.
