Michael Lee Bates, 79, passed away on Monday, February 16, 2026, after a brief illness. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Michael was a son of the late William and Mildred (Schellenbach) Bates.
Michael graduated from Central Catholic High School, Class of 1964. Later in life, he fulfilled a personal goal by earning his bachelor’s degree from IPFW in his forties—an accomplishment he held with great pride as an Indiana University graduate.
Michael was a volunteer Allen County Sheriff’s Deputy prior to dedicating 40 years to Hartson-Kennedy Countertops in Marion, Indiana where he was their National Sales Manager, where he built lasting relationships throughout his career. After retirement, his desire to serve others continued for eleven years as a Target Associate.
Michael had a deep love for the water and happiest moments were often found boating on Lake Wawasee. He enjoyed walking the beach of Middle and Blind Pass Beach in Sarasota Florida, searching for shark teeth in which he collected 11 full patron jars. He brought joy wherever he went with his fun-loving spirit and was always ready to sing a karaoke song, much to the delight of family and friends. The other side of him which brought laughter was is often quiet but quick wit.
Above all, Michael treasured time with those he loved. He is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Kristine Bates, and his sister, JoAnn Geiger. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Suzanne, Gary, and Steve Bates.
