Obituary

Melissa Lynn Butterworth, 46, went to her heavenly home to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, May 31, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 14, 1979, in Columbus, Ohio, Melissa was a daughter of Michael and Kristy (Combs) Butterworth.
Melissa graduated from Reynoldsburg High School in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. She went on to earn her nursing degree from Mount Carmel College of Nursing in 2005 and later achieved another significant milestone by earning her Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University in 2022, becoming a Nurse Practitioner.
Melissa was passionate about caring for others and viewed nursing as much more than a profession—it was her calling. She spent five years serving patients at Mount Carmel Hospital in Columbus before accepting various nursing positions throughout her career, including her most recent role with Grace at Home. As a traveling nurse, Melissa embraced opportunities to care for people in different communities while exploring new places along the way. She had a special love for the elderly and was deeply committed to building meaningful relationships with her patients. To Melissa, every patient was a person with a story, and she made it her mission to ensure they felt valued, heard, and cared for. Her compassion, encouragement, and genuine concern for others left a lasting impact on countless lives.
Melissa's faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of her life. In 2011, she moved to Fort Wayne with her sister and brother-in-law to help launch Elevate City Church. She faithfully led the children's ministry for five years and served in numerous other areas of the church, including the worship team during the last several years. Melissa was also a passionate supporter of the Los Angeles Dream Center through Elevate City Church. Whether leading, mentoring, or simply listening, Melissa's heart was always focused on helping others grow in faith and confidence.
A natural-born explorer, Melissa loved traveling and experiencing new places. She cherished her close-knit group of friends known as "The Framily," and together they enjoyed many vacations and adventures. Their friendship became a treasured part of her life, and they remained a constant source of love and support throughout her cancer journey. Whether traveling across the country or discovering somewhere new, Melissa was always ready for her next adventure. Yet no matter where she traveled, family and home remained at the center of her heart.
Melissa was known for the little things that made her uniquely herself. She loved baking homemade sourdough bread and sharing it with others. She also loved footwear and seemed to have a pair of sandals in every color imaginable. Christmas was her favorite season, and November 1st marked the official beginning of decorating her home for the holidays. She transformed her house into a Christmas wonderland each year and delighted in creating traditions and memories for those she loved.
Melissa shared an especially close relationship with her nieces and nephews, who lovingly viewed her as both a second mother and a "Super Aunt." She was deeply invested in their lives and treasured every opportunity to spend time with them. She also maintained a close and loving bond with her parents, making regular phone calls a cherished part of her daily routine. In recent years, she found great happiness with her boyfriend, Matt, whom she loved dearly. Their three years together were filled with companionship, laughter, support, and countless treasured memories.
Above all, Melissa will be remembered as an encourager. She had a rare gift of making people feel seen, valued, and loved. Her kindness, unwavering faith, leadership, and servant's heart touched the lives of many and leave a lasting legacy of compassion and hope.
Surviving are her parents, Michael and Kristy Butterworth; boyfriend, Matt Menze; siblings, Phillip (Tammy) Butterworth and Bethany (Kyle) Mills; nieces and nephews, Zachary, Kayley, Ashtyn, Judah, Braxton, Chance, Camryn, and Jadyn; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, church family members, and friends.
Melissa was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bernard and Francis Butterworth and Harold and Joan Combs.
A Celebration of Melissa's Life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Elevate City Church, 1315 S. Hanna Street, with calling from 10 a.m. until the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Elevate City Church for the Los Angeles Dream Center.
