Matthew David Haller, DMD, died with faith and peace on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at home in Fort Wayne, IN, concluding a courageous 10 year battle with Myotonic Dystrophy, an inherited, incurable, and utterly debilitating nerve and muscle disease. He endured the myriad indignities and debilitations that myotonic dystrophy imposes but never never lost his true strength: trust in the Loving God who ultimately welcomed him home.
Born in Fort Wayne, August 13, 1961, he was the youngest son of Milton W. and Patricia A. (Davenport) Haller, he graduated from Snider High School, Indiana University, and Washington University School of Dentistry. Establishing a family dentistry practice, he served the community as a devoted dentist for a quarter century until the relentless destruction of the myotonia made it impossible to continue in dentistry.
Matthew was a baptized and life member of Trinity English Lutheran Church, serving as usher, Sunday Church School teacher, and, while able, faithful worshipper. When the myotonic dystrophy restricted him to home, members of the Trinity English faith community cared for him with cards, meals, visits, and prayer. Additionally, the pastor and members of Gethsemane Lutheran Church of Fort Wayne, with a fully handicapped accessible building welcomed him as a brother in Christ. When needed, Parkview Hospice staff provided superior, compassionate care at home.
In July 1993, Matthew married Kathleen Whippo Haller at Trinity English Lutheran Church. He was proud and attentive father of Lauren E. Haller, Anna H. Haller, both of Fort Wayne, and Jon M. (Alexandra) Haller of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Mark M. and Michael F. (Christine) Haller. In addition to spouse and children, Matthew is survived by stepmother, MaryJane Haller of Louisville, KY, brother, Kevin S. (Kathryn) Haller, niece Madison and nephew, Tyler, of Lagrange, KY, and sister-in-law, Christine G. H. Haller, as well as nieces Kimberly and Lindsay, and great nephew, Austin Michael, all of Dallas, TX.
Memorial Service is 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 21, 2024 at Trinity English Lutheran Church, 450 W Wayne Street, Fort Wayne with visitation two hours prior to service beginning at 12:00 pm.
