Mary M. (Steiner) Klopfenstein, 97, formerly of Huntington, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 11, 2023, at home, surrounded by her family. Mary's passions were her faith, her family, teaching, and lifelong learning.
Mary was born on May 4, 1926, in Woodburn, to Ezra and Barbara (Gernhardt) Steiner. Mary graduated from Woodburn High School as Valedictorian, Wheaton College Conservatory of Music with honors, and Indiana University, with a Masters in Elementary Education and a Masters in music. She began her 30 year teaching career in Roanoke, IN, teaching vocal music in all 12 grades. In 1967, Mary started teaching fourth grade at Horace Mann Elementary, in Huntington. She taught private music lessons and was a former Choir Director of College Park Church.
Mary was married July 30, 1948 to Richard E. Klopfenstein. She is survived by her three daughters, all of Fort Wayne, Judy Klopfenstein Roberts, Karen Klopfenstein, and Ann (Bob) Willey. Mary is much beloved by her three grandchildren, Ben (Anna) Roberts, Kristen (Dan) Garde, and Kara (Trevis) Hull. She is also survived by three great grandchildren, Mia, Jed, and Oliver.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, her parents, and her sisters Ruth Zimmerman and Lois Otto.
A private memorial service for the immediate family will be held. Burial will be in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
