Obituary

Lisa (Simon) Ellert, 62, was taken far too soon on June 11, 2021 in an auto accident in Fort Wayne. Her many friends, co-workers and children, Nathan and Korinne, already miss her sweet smile, loving disposition and non-stop energy. Lisa was born in Defiance, Ohio on April 23, 1959 to the late Walt and Sandy Simon. After graduating from Van Wert High School, Lisa joined the U.S. Army, becoming what she jokingly referred to as a "trained killer." A proud veteran, Lisa was honored to have served her country. Lisa then attended nursing school at IPFW. Nursing was a true calling for Lisa. She worked at Lutheran Hospital for 42 years, touching countless lives and making lifelong friends. She built a strong reputation for an unwavering commitment to patients, her caring nature and wicked sense of humor.

Lisa's first passion was her family, Tim, Nathan, Korinne and her dog Xena. She married her late husband Tim Ellert in September of 1986. They were the type of couple you would always see together, whether at their kids' events, in the front pew of church or on bicycles. Lisa was also passionate about her faith. She was an active member of St. Jude Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir, was a team leader for Christ Renews His Parish, and a seemingly tireless volunteer. Both her children attended St. Jude school and Bishop Dwenger, where Lisa also volunteered to help in any way possible. Saying yes to thankless tasks was one of Lisa's superpowers. She always had time to pitch in and lend a hand, no ask was too big or job too menial for her to help.

Lisa's tireless energy extended to her hobbies, as well. She was an endurance cyclist, tackling several rides of more than 100 miles, including Indiana's famous Hilly Hundred. She wasn't a member of any particular biking group, opting instead to ride with what she called a "rag-tag group" of cyclists who became fast friends. That was Lisa. She made friends easily everywhere she went. She was always ready with her quick smile and a joke, but she was also there when anyone needed a helping hand or a steady shoulder.

Lisa is survived by her beloved children, Nathan Ellert of Indianapolis, IN, and Korinne Ellert of Bloomington, IN, as well as her step-children Aimee (Nicholas) Wentworth of Angola, Indiana and Philip (Sirena) Ellert of Columbia, Indiana and five grandchildren; siblings, Jana (Dave) Parsons of Boise, ID, and Renee (Jesse) Velasquez of Dayton, OH; and her fearless wiener dog, Xena Warrior Princess.

Lisa was preceded in death by her loving husband Timothy Ellert and her parents Walter Simon Jr. and Sandy (Rosselet) Simon.
