Lawrence A. McFadden of Fort Wayne, Indiana, left this world on Sunday, June 28, 2026. He was 71 years old. Larry was born on July 2, 1954, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to parents, Donald and Nicolette McFadden. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas. He is survived by his significant other, Patricia Kowalczyk, brother, Richard (and Thelma), and sister, Donna. Larry is also survived by lifelong friend, Shannon Raptis, and a community of friends who will miss him greatly. A celebration of his life will be planned in the coming months.
Larry was a graduate of Purdue University and served in the Navy from 1972 to 1976. It was after that time that Larry filled a jar with beans and joined in with many bands to keep the rhythm. He also took up photography and enjoyed taking and developing black and white photos. While most notably, Larry was a prolific writer, sharing his poetry freely. He was involved in the poetry slams around the Fort along with other local poets. Over the years he played shaker with many bands but for the last 26 years he was the last original member of the Grateful Groove. To those of us who knew him, and there are hundreds of us, Larry was our metrognome. His collection of shakers has grown since that initial jar of beans.
Since Friday’s child is loving and giving it makes sense that Larry was such a kind and sharing person. It was not unusual for him to hand you a little Buddha to travel with. He might share a molasses cookie or candy with you. He gave concert tickets and rides to said concerts to more people than could be counted. He loved to share his love. He was known to many local musicians and fans, as well as to the staff at local bars and eateries. He always had a smile. If you ever received a hug from Larry, you knew he was a true friend. May your soul soar with the hawks dear brother. We will miss your laughter, your insight and your hugs immensely.
