Lawanda Windom, 75, got her wings and went to heaven to walk with Jesus on September 2, 2026. Lawanda was born July 14, 1951, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to the late Idella Windom and Ulice Windom.
Lawanda’s faith in her Lord and savior Jesus Christ gives us comfort in knowing that she is now in her Father’s loving arms. She dedicated her life to Christ at a very young age. At 9 years old she was baptized at Progressive Baptist Church. Throughout her life she also attended Southern Heights Baptist and The Ridge.
She affected numerous young lives from her many nieces and nephews to the thousands of students she taught over her 41 years of service in Fort Wayne Community Schools.
She discovered her calling for teaching at the youthful age of 12 when she stepped in to teach children’s Sunday school. She later attended Fort Wayne Bible College (Taylor University) and
began teaching at Fort Wayne Community schools in 1975 where she encouraged excellence, open-mindedness, and was adored by her students and colleagues. She taught at Lane Middle School where in 2003 she won the Teacher of the Year Award for her inspiring creativity and commitment in the classroom. She retired in 2016.
She is survived by her siblings Gregory and Glenn Windom. Nieces: Alonda McGhee and Amelia Windom. Nephews: Marcus Manning, Gregory Manning, and Gentel McGhee. Great Nieces: Alandra McGhee, Julyana Armour, Geniyah McGhee, Gemirea Armour- McGhee, Gelyna Armour- McGhee, and Gianni McGhee. Great Nephew: Avante McGhee. Great Great Niece: Maryiah Gray.
At Lawanda’s request, she was granted a private service and burial. Lawanda wanted all her friends and family to know that she has been redeemed!
