Jon C. Thomas, 74, of Fort Wayne passed away Monday, August 8, 2022. He was born in Fort Wayne to the late James and Laura Thomas. Jon Graduated in 1975 from the University of Michigan with a PhD in astrophysics. He taught astronomy at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill for five years. After teaching, Jon started working for Lockheed Martin and retired after 30 years as an orbit specialist. Jon loved woodworking, making many beautiful things for friends and family. He was also a member of the Fort Wayne Astronomical Society and served as an astronomer in residence at Acadia National Park for six years. He is survived by his wife, Mary of nearly 32 years; a sister, Pam Putt of Fort Wayne; nieces, Pam (Paul) Manders and Jenn (Kevin) Thomas; cousins, Amy Williams, Donna Sandefur, Ross (Shannae) Williams, Chelsey (Julian) Buitrago; great-nephew, Blake Williams and very dear friends, Becky Armsted, Stephanie Stilabower, and Greg Jacobs. There will be no services or calling at this time. Donations in Jon's honor may be made to fortwayneastronomicalsociety.com. Jon will continue his journey with a space burial and returned to us as a meteorite.
