Obituary

John R. Walker passed away peacefully at 5:25am on Sunday, October 31, 2021. He built a beautiful life with the love of his life, Patricia for 65 years. They believed that if they had the faith as little as a mustard seed that they could move mountains and indeed they did. John and Pat were married May 18, 1956, while John was in the Army stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. They eloped! Pat caught a bus out of Mishawaka, IN and they said their "I do's" in front of the base Chaplain. The first child, Steve, came along in 1960. John's proudest moment is when Steve opened his own music store. The second child was a daughter, Coleen. She was born in 1961 and John took great pride in her as she followed his footsteps into the Army and later became a schoolteacher. The third child found his way into the world on Pat's birthday in 1968, David. John teared up with pride when David went into the Air Force after Graduating high school and then later became a 911 Dispatcher. The family of five started out in Michigan City, IN for seven years and then moved to Syracuse, IN where they stayed for 11 more. John was thrilled when he was able to take the kids out onto Syracuse Lake and Lake Wawasee in their speed boat. They had a yearly tradition of watching the Fourth of July fireworks from the boat. The family went on yearly vacations most notably, Mackinac Island, Wisconsin Dells, Smokey Mountains, the Circus Museum in Baraboo Wisconsin, Rocky Mountains, Florida and Disney World and the list goes on. After moving to Fort Wayne, IN, the three kids started their own families. Steve had a son, Michael. Coleen had two girls, Danielle and Michelle. David had a daughter, Kimberly. John took great joy in teaching the grandkids the finer arts of fishing, camping in the well-loved camper, bike riding, campfire making and cooking popcorn in a cast iron kettle over the open flame. John was very happy when the great grandkids came along, Alexis, Emily, Owen, Brooklyn, Ava, Charlotte and John Xavier. John loved the family dogs Pal and Tango. He loved to watch as Pal chased the ducks from the pier in Syracuse and Tango played ball and tug of war in Fort Wayne. John was a strong spiritual man who passed on his beliefs to his family. Many events were based on church activities. He worked for over 40 years in the insurance industry mostly spent at Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company. Service is 3 pm, Saturday, November 6, 2021 at his church of 42 years, Bethany United Methodist Church, 7715 Sunny Lane, with calling from 1 pm until the service. Memorials may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church or The Shepherd's House. FairHaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services is handling arrangements. John leaves behind thousands of wonderful memories that were endeared in the hearts of family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
