John L. Shook, age 79, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, in Fort Wayne, IN after struggling with pneumonia.
January 3rd, 1947 became notable when twin boys exploded onto the scene in Hillsdale, MI! John and his twin brother, Joe, spent their childhood keeping everyone in Montgomery, MI on their toes. They played together, worked jobs together, pursued hobbies together, and even had many of the same health issues growing up. As adults, they stayed close and you would often find them together playing music or pursuing their latest hobby interest.
John married the love of his life, Diane, and they spent the next 60 years traveling the highs and lows of life together. The last several years, his favorite story to tell was how they met and how good she was at taking care of him.
John earned a degree in Mechanical engineering Michigan State University and worked for Chrysler until he had to leave due to a disability. He continued his passion for cars by working on race cars as a hobby after he left Chrysler. He remained a loyal MSU and avid NASCAR fan all his days! He earned his amateur radio license and loved listening to and playing music. He enjoyed meeting people and never knew a stranger. You knew a trip anywhere would be twice as long with him there because he would be making friends all along the way. John also spent time helping widows and tutoring friends in math so they could pass exams that would help them achieve their employment goals.
John is survived by his wife, Diane Shook; two sons, John (Libby) Shook II and Eric (Angie) Shook; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Karen (Gary) Scott.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marlin and Maralee Shook, his older brother, Jim Shook, and twin brother, Joe Shook.
A memorial gathering will be held in Michigan at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in John's memory to the Alzheimer's Association. You can view his memorial page and make a donation at https://events.alz.org/fundraisers/angieshook.
