John S. Schmitt, 78, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2021. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, John was the son of the late Lawrence and Amelia Schmitt. John graduated from South Side High School, class of 1962, and attended Indiana Business School and IPFW. John worked at his family-owned business, Perfection Varnish Co. for 28 years, prior to his successful 44-year Real Estate career with Coldwell Banker, Remax and Century 21 Bradley, where he retired in 2019. John served as president of the Pine Valley Homeowner Association in the 1980's, and served as the first president of the Autumn Ridge Homeowner Association. John dearly loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved his dogs (Star and P.J.) and all that went on before him. He enjoyed Komet Hockey and attended every opening night game in the history of the Komets prior to 2020. John was an avid golfer and loved playing in the Hoosier Celebrities Tournament for over 20 years. In 1981, he was the Indiana State Putting Champion and represented Indiana in the National Open Putting Championship at Disney World. He loved a good poker game and playing in many local tournaments. He also played in the World Series of Poker and participated in the Hall of Fame Classic in Las Vegas. One of the most enjoyable things that John did was to sing. He loved Elvis and impersonated him at many reunions, wedding receptions and birthday and holiday parties. He brought lots of smiles to the faces of people he entertained. He loved singing Karaoke at many of the local venues. Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Jeanne Schmitt; children, Cathy (Jason) Thomas and Larry Schmitt; grandchildren, Jacob (Chelsey) Thomas, Allison (Chris) Szaflarski, Evan (Abby) Thomas; great-grandchildren, Aria and Ava. Celebration of Life at a later date. Memorials may be made to SPCA or Plant a Tree in his honor. Fairhaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services is handling arrangements.
