John C. O’Connor Jr., 78, of Zanesville, IN, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at his home after a battle with cancer.
John was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, class of ’66. He’s an alumnus of Saint Francis College '70 (B.A.) '77 (M.S.), where he played basketball, golf, and soccer and met his wife. He and Barbara were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in 1969 and together raised five children. He taught U.S. History and coached multiple sports at Bishop Luers High School from 1970 to 1985. At school and at home, he encouraged critical thinking, instilled a work ethic, and exemplified the Irish art of debate. His second career was in sales at multiple car dealerships until 2001.
John was a stroke survivor of 25 years and faced each day with resilience and determination. He attended weekly programs and services at Turnstone, which had a meaningful impact on his overall well-being. He found joy in watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow, and in pastimes like playing cards, chess, and watching sports, especially Hoosiers basketball and White Sox baseball.
John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara O’Connor; children, John (Melissa) O’Connor III, David (Angella Garcia) O’Connor, Amy (Joe) Kindig, Maggie (Adam) Crampton, daughter-in-law, Angela (Bresler) O’Connor; 13 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brother, Tom (Patricia) O’Connor; sisters, Maureen (Michael) Beard, Kathleen (James) Vachon, and Angela (William) Jackson and step-mother, Rita (McKenzie) O'Connor.
