On Friday, February 21, 2025, John R. Leal peacefully passed away at the age of ninety-five. Born in East Chicago, Indiana in 1929, John served as a veteran of the Korean War. He earned degrees from Valparaiso University, Valparaiso School of Law, and Northwestern University. In 1961, John began his career as a law clerk to Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Harold E. Achor, and from 1962 to 2019, he practiced law in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
John's professional affiliations included membership and Board of Directors service with the Allen County Bar Association, as well as participation in the Indiana State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was also a Fellow of the Indiana Bar Association.
John actively contributed to his local community. He was a dedicated member of the Fort Wayne Rotary Club, serving as both Past President and Governor of District 6540 Rotary International, and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. John's involvement extended to the Fort Wayne Estate Planning Council and the Quest Club. As a founding member and Director of WBNI-FM Public Radio, he served on its Board of Directors and contributed to its growth and success. Additionally, he held roles as Director for the local Homebound Meals and the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana.
At Trinity Episcopal Church, John was an engaged member, participating in its Vestry and various committees. He was also affiliated with several fraternal organizations, including Highland Lodge No. 762, F & A.M; Mizpah Shrine; Fort Wayne York Rite Bodies: Chapter No. 19, R.A.M.; Fort Wayne Council No. 4, Cryptic Masons; Fort Wayne Commandery No. 4, K.T; and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
John is survived by his former wife, Joann Pettit Leal, their children Jeffrey Pettit Leal and Elizabeth Anne Ash (Tim), and his beloved grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Ash, Austin James Ash, and Ryan Josef Leal.
There will be a private service for the family. Preferred memorials to Trinity Episcopal Church, 611 W. Berry St., Fort Wayne, IN 46802.
