Obituary

Joe Rohrer Woodward, 82, peacefully passed away February 14, 2025, at Lutheran Hospital while surrounded by the love of his family.  He was born April 24, 1942, in Anderson, IN. to the late Maurice and Catherine (Rohrer) Woodward. Joe was baptized, confirmed and a member of Mt. Comfort United Methodist church. In 1946, his father left teaching to begin Woodward Seed Service on the family farm in Hancock County, IN. Growing up on idyllic Walnut Grove Farms, McCordsville, IN, Joe spent his formative years working on the farm, enjoying model trains and planes, being a 10-year 4-H member and earning 9 letters as a 3-sport athlete at Mount Comfort H.S. (Class of 1960). After high school, Joe attended Purdue University, his father's alma mater (class of 1926), studying agronomy and kept cheering for Purdue athletics. After college, Joe served in the US Navy in the Caribbean and Mediterranean as a machinist and instructor. After meeting Jo Ann Kriegbaum at the mutually significant Lake Wawasee, they had their first date and became engaged in the Woodward wood boat. They were married on July 30, 1966, by his uncle Dr. K.K. Merryman at her parents' home in Huntington, IN. Joe's passions for sports, agriculture and family came together as he managed Woodward Seed Service, a seed corn producer, operated with his father. Joe enjoyed managing the business, teaching employees about seed production, the value of working hard and having fun through basketball in their warehouse. At the farm, Joe created wonderful memories for the extended family and friends whether it be playing on the corn cob pile, sledding behind a massive tractor or enjoying events similar to the Indy 500. Joe sat on many farm related boards and was an owner in MIGRO. Joe's family of five moved to Fort Wayne to be closer to family and he began a second career with the emerging Discover Card; Joe was so competitive and successful in the sales arena, Discover changed its incentive programs more than once due to his results! He always maintained a farm-like garden on his family property in Fort Wayne; he was a farmer at heart. Joe and family became members of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where he served on the property committee, school board and coached girls' basketball. After retirement, Joe joined Bible Study Fellowship. His involvement in the local Society of Antique modelers (SAM) was very important to him. Joe won local and national flying contests and was a skilled builder. Wherever Joe was, there was laughter and fun to be had. He is survived by his wife Jo Ann, his children Ann, Beth, and John (Kimberly) Woodward, his grandchildren Charlie, Jack, and Eleanor, sisters Rolene (John) Popp, Linda (Donn) Baird, and his beloved nieces and nephews. Joe had a special way with people and loved the Lord and had a well lived life. A very special thank you to the doctors, nurses and entire staff of the Lutheran Hospital Med-Surg ICU for their exemplary care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
