Obituary

Mrs. Jocelyn Claire "Jocy" McCoy (née Wretzky), age 92, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Born on November 23, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, she lived a life dedicated to education, family, and community.

Jocelyn graduated from George Rogers Clark High School in Gary, Indiana, in 1951. She pursued higher education at Indiana University Bloomington and Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana. Her passion for learning and teaching shaped her lifelong career as an educator. Jocelyn worked as a paraprofessional teacher's aide within the school system and also served as a private tutor for many students in Northwest Indiana. She was known for her personalized lesson plans and one-on-one approach to helping students succeed academically. After relocating to Alabama in the late 1980s, she continued her work as a paraprofessional teacher's aide in Alabama schools.

Jocelyn’s dedication to education extended beyond the classroom. In the 1990s, she spearheaded the creation of a library in Lillian, Alabama, demonstrating her commitment to fostering literacy and learning within her community. Her love for children and belief in the power of education were central themes throughout her life.

A devoted mother and grandmother, Jocelyn is survived by her four children: Jim McCoy (Maria Muskus McCoy), Holly Shepperd (the late Steve Shepperd), Michelle Newbeck (Jim), and Nancy Leslie (Mark). She was a proud grandmother to six grandchildren: Aaron (Tiffany) McCoy, Stefanie (Matt) Fliter, Denise Roznowski, James (Keely) Newbeck, Samantha Newbeck, and Karolla Breda; and cherished great-grandmother to eight great-grandchildren: Jaxon, Beckett, Elan, Lianna, Andrew, Addison, Aurora, and Penelope.

Jocelyn is survived by one sister, Marci Hayes (Richard Issacs) and was predeceased by her beloved husband of over 65 years, Richard Harry McCoy, who passed away in 2020; and her brother Jerry Wretzky, who passed away in 2024.

In addition to her professional accomplishments and family devotion, Jocelyn found joy in simple pleasures such as reading and knitting. Her warm smile and kind words left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was an exemplary role model who always sought to inspire those around her with positivity and grace. Remarkably resilient and resourceful, Jocelyn raised four children without obtaining a driver’s license until 1979—a testament to her determination and adaptability.

Donations can be made to the Lillian Perdido Bay Library, PO Box 237, Lillian, AL, 36549

Jocelyn’s legacy is one of love for learning and unwavering support for those around her. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
