JoAnn Denise “Jo” Bastress, 72, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Jo was the daughter of the late Albert “Al” Reed and Mary Ann (Goeglein) Reed.
Jo graduated from Snider High School, Class of 1972. It was there that she met the love of her life, Tim Bastress. The two first met in July at Lakeside Park, and two years later they were married—also in July—beginning a life together that would span 52 devoted years of friendship, love, and partnership.
Jo dedicated 27 years to Fort Wayne Community Schools, where she worked as a Preschool Teacher and Secretary. She cared deeply about the children and families she served and was known for her kindness, patience, and welcoming spirit.
Family was the center of Jo’s life. She had an extraordinary gift for loving others deeply and genuinely, and those who knew her often remarked that she never had a negative word to say about anyone. Her gentle spirit, warmth, and steady presence made everyone feel welcome and valued.
Jo found peace and happiness in simple pleasures. She loved relaxing outdoors, often floating in her pool with a good book. She also treasured time spent at her home in Sarasota, where she could once again be near the water, soaking in the sunshine and enjoying the beauty of the coast.
Jo was known for being wonderfully organized, and her home reflected that care and attention. As her children lovingly said, “Everything had its place in the home,” and Jo was always prepared for whatever life might bring.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Tim Bastress; children, Cara (Eugene Sanks) Berg and Matthew Reed-Bastress; grandchildren, Alex (Hannah) Manuilow, Ava Rose Berg, Alivia JoAnn Berg, Madison Bastress, Makayla Bastress, Myla Bastress, and Jayda Bastress; five great-grandchildren with one on the way; siblings, Tim Reed, Tom (Laurie) Reed, Jane Reed, and Robin (Greg) Pearson; along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Jo’s Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity English Lutheran Church, 450 W. Washington Blvd, with calling one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.
