On early Thursday evening, June 6th, Jerry Westendorf, aged 89, left the party. He had partook of all life's buffet had to offer, the sweet, the sour, and everything in between. And he relished it, was appreciative of it, and realized what a gift it was.
Like all good party goers, Jerry contributed greatly to the event. Whether it be through a joke (both good and painfully bad), political debates, sports discussions, history reminiscences (particularly military), he always gave his best and brought the best out of his audience.
Jerry was born and raised in Fort Wayne, IN. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1952. After graduation, Jerry joined the Air Force, where he served from 1953-1957. During his service, Jerry spent time in Korea. Jerry continued his Air Force service in the Reserves from 1957-1961.
Following the military, Jerry served on the Fort Wayne Police Department for 21.5 years, retiring as Captain. Following the department, Jerry worked for Jack Eiser Sales for 20 years, before working 10 years at the Allen County Highway Department.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elsie Westendorf, sister Patricia Ebler, brother Larry Westendorf and first wife Mary Westendorf.
Surviving family includes Jerry's wife, Janet Westendorf, children Patti (Steve) Wagner, Jerome (Meghan) Westendorf, David (Amy) Westendorf, Cindi (Todd) Walter, Amber (Paul) Halloran, and Andrew (Amber) Aylor.
Jerry also enjoyed spending time with his 13 grandkids and 18 great-grandkids.
For those of us left, his passing will leave a great hole. But one, over time, we'll fill by not mourning him, but by celebrating a good guy, a good family man, a good friend, and a life well lived.
A memorial service for Jerry will be held on Monday June 10th, 2024, at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior at FairHaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton St. There will also be a memorial visitation on Sunday June 9th 2024, from 2-7pm, also at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials in Jerry's honor may be directed to the Fort Wayne Pit Bull Coalition or Humane Fort Wayne.
