Jeanie Popoff, 93, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, died on May 26th, 2023. She died in the comfort of her home, surrounded by family and friends, which was her expressed wish. Jeanie was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin, June 1, 1929, to Vasil and Christine Spasoff. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Fort Wayne and settled in the Weisser Park neighborhood, home to many Macedonian family and friends. There she cherished growing up with the traditions of her Macedonian heritage. Jeanie graduated from Central High School, where she excelled in all studies and was voted Prom Queen of her junior class. Upon graduation, she married her high school sweetheart Carl Popoff and soon they started a family. She was a devoted mother and wife.
Jeanie loved being active. She worked part-time as a secretary at First Presbyterian Church, and, later, for twenty years, she held a full-time judicial assistant position with the Allen County Misdemeanor and Traffic Court. She loved the court. She also loved traveling, cooking, gardening, and dancing, especially Macedonian dancing with its notable combination of culture and fashion. She was an expert and taught a Macedonian Dance course at Indiana University-Purdue University (Fort Wayne campus) in its Continuing Education Program. The popularity of this course led to a surprising grant awarded to Jeanie for studying folk dance in Macedonia.
Jeanie was preceded in death by her husband Carl, brother-in- law Alex Choka, and sister Shirley Goeglein. Surviving are her son Larry (Tamara), daughter Laura McCann (Jeffrey), sister Anita Choka, and brother-in-law Stanley Goeglein as well as Marshall Howey, many nieces and nephews.
As proud as I am of my mother for all her accomplishments...my mother's battle against depression was her most successful battle. Debilitating at time..... she endured.
