Obituary

James Albert Widmeyer (Jim), 83, of Fort Wayne, passed peacefully into his eternal home on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. He was born on January 22, 1942, in Huntington, Indiana, to the late Manford Albert and Eileen C. (Loney) Widmeyer. James proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he dedicated 18 years to working at Eckrich before later retiring from Southwest Allen County Schools, where he served as a groundskeeper for 17 years. His strong work ethic and commitment to service were evident throughout his life.

Those who knew Jim will remember him for his deep-rooted faith in Jesus, his unwavering devotion to family, his love of country, and his generous spirit. He was known for helping others while spreading love and kindness, leaving a lasting impact on all who crossed his path.

Jim loved family gatherings of any kind, especially when they included plenty of chocolate. He cherished time with his grandchildren, whether it was giving rides across town, attending sporting events, recitals, and horse shows, or simply playing in the backyard. Jim was “Grandpa” not only to his grandchildren, but to many others with whom he formed deep and meaningful bonds. His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Jenita Widmeyer; his daughters, Michelle (William) Blankenship and Ami Jo (Michael) Reader; stepchildren, Denise (Kevin) Clute and Tina Thornhill, and Hugh (Teresa) Thornhill; sisters, Judy (Jim) Trowbridge, Joan Parkinson, and Sue Lynch; 13 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Widmeyer, and his sister, JoAnn Corn.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on January 22, 2026, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Arlington Park Clubhouse.

Jim’s memory lives on through his family, friends, and his passion for helping others. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation ( www.T2T.org ), Samaritan’s Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org ) or Fort Wayne Rescue Mission ( www.fwrm.org ).
