James "Jim" Emil Mergenthal, age 82, passed away on June 22, 2026, in Fort Wayne, IN. He was born in Batesville, IN, to the late Emmet and Ruth Mergenthal.

Jim was a devoted choral teacher for 32 years, serving at Hoagland High School and Monroeville High School, and continuing his career after their merger into Heritage High School. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served faithfully as a Deacon and as an interim Choral Director.

A gifted musician, Jim sang with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Chorus and served as the music director for the Center Stage summer theater programs. He also generously volunteered his time at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Sondra Mergenthal; and his siblings, Linda (Bill) Loftus and Curt (Brenda) Mergenthal.

Jim was preceded in death by his son, Robert Mergenthal, and his sister, Nancy Mergenthal.

Service is 11:00 am, Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 W Wayne St, Fort Wayne, IN 46802, with calling one hour prior, beginning at 10:00 am. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 pm, Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the St. John's United Church of Christ Cemetery, 300 N. Huntersville Rd, Batesville, IN 47006.
