James O. (Jim) Chaille, 83, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2026. Jim was born on January 5, 1943, in Fort Branch, Indiana. His family later relocated to Anderson, Indiana, where he graduated salutatorian from St. Mary’s High School. He attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating with a degree in biology. He then served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement. He earned his MBA from Miami University in Ohio and returned to Anderson, where he worked for General Motors for nearly 30 years.
Never one to sit still, upon retiring from his role in supplier development at GM, Jim continued to work for several years with Gerry’s Construction Services, where he transported and operated heavy machinery.
Jim married Sue Ann (Hitz) Chaille on the Notre Dame campus in 1974. They were married for 49 years. Ann passed away from complications of Alzheimer’s disease in July 2023, and Jim was her devoted caregiver during the last several years of her life.
Jim was an amazing father to Thomas Chaille (wife Holly), Peter Chaille (wife Lindsay), and Kathryn (Chaille) Clarke (husband Geoff), and a proud grandfather to four grandchildren, Claire, Luke, Grace, and Charlotte.
Jim was happiest spending time and working outdoors. He enjoyed hiking and backpacking, and he was a passionate Notre Dame football fan, attending games regularly throughout his life. He was a helper, mentor, and friend to countless people.
Jim is survived by his siblings, Pat Chaille (Eckstein) and J. Bruce Chaille, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mildred, and his siblings, Thomas and Richard.
The family will celebrate Jim’s life privately.
