Obituary

Herbert "Herb" E. Summers, 78, passed October 13, 2024. Born on October 4, 1946, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to the late Walter H. and Catherine E. (Smith) Summers. Herb attended Rudisill, Forest Park, Lakeside Junior High and graduated from North Side High School, class of 1964. Herb was a gifted athlete. In baseball he was an all-star catcher (Marsh Foodliner-Lawton Park Little League, Pony League, and Junior Fed). He also participated in Zollner Piston Knot Hole League with his brothers, Dick and Ted. At North Side, Herb excelled at football, basketball and track, earning a record 8 varsity letters and was a member of North Side's 1963 State Championship track team. Herb attended Ball State University, the University of St. Francis. He served in Vietnam as a member of a Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees) and Midway Island. Upon returning, he graduated from Ball State University in 1972. After college he worked for the Dallas based Howard Blender Bank Consulting Firm for 25 years. He was a lifelong member of Crescent Avenue (EUB) Methodist Church. Herb said that this was his best original thought: "If we discuss politics and religion, we run the risk of losing a friend. If we do not discuss these subjects, we run the risk of losing our nation. If people cannot discuss these important subjects, they will become fools who will only discuss sports and entertainment." Herb is survived by his brothers, Ted (Joey Brake) Summers, Michael (Cheryl Halbert) Summers; sister, Kathy (Chuck) Summers Garrett; sister-in-law, Linda (Clouse) Summers; and many nieces and nephews of several generations. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Elaine Summers and brother, Dick Summers. Private Family Services will take place. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crescent Avenue Methodist Church, Turnstone, or North Side Athletic Department. FairHaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services is handling arrangements.
