Obituary

Gregory J. Bateman was called home by the Lord on Friday, May 26, 2017. He was born in Artesia, CA April 13, 1949 to Daniel and Gale Bateman.
His early years were spent in Southern California and he graduated from California State University-Long Beach in 1971 with a degree in microbiology.

Greg worked for various companies, first in a laboratory at Baxter-Travenol, and then moved to sales for Varian, Beckman and Niccolai selling science instrumentation and later, pollution monitoring equipment for nuclear power plants.

In 1980 he married Pamela Parker in Golden, Colorado. They made their home in Colorado until Pamela's retirement in 2006 when they moved to Indiana to be near Pamela's family. Greg continued to work for two years, driving trucks for Schneider Trucking.

Greg will be remembered for his generosity and helpfulness, but most of all for his sense of humor and love for life. His hobbies were extensive. He became a pilot at age 18, played piano and guitar, made wine and beer, flew model airplanes, loved to bake, loved to ride motorcycles and had his amateur radio license for 50 years, just to name a few. He had taught computer classes for Microsoft and IBM and was the neighborhood "computer geek". He and Pam had traveled extensively in the US, Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean and had owned several motorhomes. Everyone always said if Greg wanted to do something, he would learn about it and then do it. Greg also was a true animal lover and he and Pam had rescued many dogs and cats over his lifetime.
He will be greatly missed by his special cat, Peanut, and his dog Ruger.

Greg is survived by his wife, Pamela of Columbia City, son LCDR Jeffrey Daniel (Vicki Lynn) Bateman, three granddaughters, Jillian, Rachel and Jacqueline all of San Antonio, TX, sisters, Dr. Charlene (Ralph) Dean of Corona, CA, Dana (Mike) Kelley of Hillsborough, NC and Margaret Ann (David) Brake, Conroe, TX, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Paul Bateman.

Greg was also a Shrine member and belonged to the Columbia City Masonic Lodge #189 and was a lifetime member of the Antique Power Club.

There will be cremation and a Celebration of life at a later date. In remembrance of Greg, the family asks that donations be made to the Whitley County Humane Shelter or Shriners Children's Hospitals.
