Eugene Matthews, age 89, passed away on September 14, 2026, in Fort Wayne, IN. He was born in Selma, AL, to the late Lee Matthews and Katie Ford.

Eugene worked as a machinist at GE and a presser at Friendly Cleaners. He enjoyed cooking and eating, and was especially known for his beloved BBQ sauce. He also enjoyed watching westerns and listening to the blues. Most of all, Eugene cherished time spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lucille Matthews; daughter, Desiree Matthews; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Eugene was preceded in death by Larry Matthews, Kevin Matthews, Antonio Matthews, and Vicki Jenkins; two sisters, Thelma Hardy and Katie Smith; and brother, John Matthews.
