Obituary

Donald E. Smith, age 84, passed away Friday, January 26, 2024 in Fort Wayne. He was born in Fort Wayne to the late Joseph and Ruth Smith. Don worked his career as a steamfitter and was an active member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local #166 for 57 years and served as an instructor for apprentices. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 499, and a Master Mason with the Summit City Lodge. Don enjoyed classic car shows, working on antique clocks, crafting stain glass window inserts, scuba diving and loved sailing. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gloria Smith; children, Michele (Kirk) Kassing of Churubusco, IN, and Mike (Michelle) Smith of Fort Wayne, IN; grandchildren, Joshua Kassing, Zakary (Mary) Kassing, Dustin Smith, Christopher Smith, and Marissa (Brandt) Hitzfield; and his great-grandchildren, Oliver and Arthur. Don was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Paul Smith Jr. and Terry Smith. Service is 3:00 pm, Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Fairhaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton St. with calling two hours prior beginning at 1:00 pm. Burial at Eel River Cemetery will take place at a later date.
