David Allan Schmid, 68, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at his home. Born in Highland Park, Illinois, David was the son of the late Allan David and Nancy (Mason) Schmid.
During his working years, David proudly served as a police officer in several communities, including Mount Prospect, Illinois. His journey into law enforcement began in his youth as a Boy Scout, an experience that helped shape his character and instilled in him a lifelong passion for teaching, history, and historical reenactment.
David was an avid reader and an enthusiastic collector of knowledge, maintaining an extensive personal library filled with books and information about historical living, reenactment, and fishing. He traveled throughout the United States, sharing his knowledge and teaching others, especially young people, about nautical history, fishing techniques, and traditional ways of life. Above all, David loved being outdoors and felt most at home surrounded by nature.
A familiar and beloved presence at The Old Fort, David was affectionately known as the “Dutch Fisherman.” He took great joy in sharing his knowledge with visitors, always approaching others with a humble heart, a gentle spirit, and a wonderful sense of humor. He had a special gift for making learning enjoyable and bringing history to life. The many friendships he formed and the lives he touched through his teaching will be fondly remembered.
During the last several years, while courageously facing illness, David developed especially close relationships with his caregivers, who quickly became like family to him. He brought joy to those around him, and it was truly something special to witness his enthusiasm for educating others, his deep appreciation for nature, and his dedication to preserving the traditions he loved. His gentle soul, humor, and passion for sharing his knowledge will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
