Obituary

David Edward Schenkel, 81, passed away on August 30, 2026, in Fort Wayne. He was born on April 17, 1945, to his adoptive parents Edward and Marjorie Schenkel.
David began his career in the funeral industry at Sloan & Sons and later served in the sheriff's department for more than 20 years. Most recently, he worked in the security department at the City County Building. Throughout his career, David set an example of hard work, and his heart for serving others was evident in everything he did.
David is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Schenkel; Buddy The Cat; children, Katrina Nichols, Theresa (Brent) Schlegel, and Benjamin (Sarah) Schenkel; and grandchildren, Isabella Nichols (21), Gracie Schlegel (18), Isaac Nichols (18), Emma Schenkel (16), Jonathan Schlegel (15), Edward Schenkel (14), Ivan Nichols (13), Eli Schenkel (13), and Reid Richmond (12).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Marjorie Schenkel.
David had a big heart for animals, especially his beloved cat, Buddy The Cat. He was a man of faith, and his Catholic faith was very important to him. David loved his family dearly. He shared a special connection with his grandchildren, always encouraging and supporting them by being present for their dance recitals, sporting events, and other important moments in their lives.
A funeral service will take place on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. and continuing until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Cedar Creek Cemetery.
