David Preston Laws, 78, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at his home with family by his side. David was born an only child on June 27, 1945 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to the late George Huber and Reba Ione (Hammond) Laws. He was a 1963 graduate of North Side High School and received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Rose Polytechnical Institute (Rose-Hulman University) in 1967. He went on to earn a M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Washington University in St Louis in 1969. David sat for his Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in 1987 and was the President of Pollution Control Systems (PCS) and later InSite, Incorporated.
He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. At various times, he served as the congregation President, Chairman of the Board of Buildings and Maintenance and Superintendent of the Sunday School. David devoted many hours to being a good steward of the earth for the Lord. Through the years, he enjoyed many hobbies including restoring an Austin Healy Sprite and learning to fly an airplane in high school, ham radio operation and photography in college and ballroom dancing and dog rescue and training as an adult.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Helen (Hallien) Laws; children, Joseph (Carrie) Laws of Garrett, Indiana; Sara Meagan (Ryan) West of Wilmington, North Carolina; Sean Esterline of Charlotte, Michigan and Sara Jane (Peter) Schillace of Fort Wayne, Indiana; grandchildren, Evalynn and Preston Laws; Elliot and Julia West; Morgan and Lauren Falconer; Lila, Emma and Sky Esterline; and Mackenzie (Paul) Sanders.
Service is 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 3425 Cresent Avenue, with calling one hour prior. Additional calling is on Monday, November 20, 2023 from 5-8 PM at FairHaven Funeral Home, 6557 N. Clinton St. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials are to the Alzheimer's Association, Holy Cross Lutheran Building Fund or Humane Fort Wayne.
