David Allen Hieber, 84, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, David was the son of the late Rudolph and Mildred (Kimmel) Hieber.
David graduated from New Haven High School, Class of 1959. He married the love of his life Carolyn Bender on August 31, 1962, at Concordia Lutheran Church.
David built a long and diverse career, faithfully serving his community in many capacities. He worked for Fort Wayne Newspapers, serving for many years as Manager of Distribution. He was also employed by Zollner Corporation and Mobil Aerial Towers. Most notably, David dedicated many years to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, where he served as Captain of the Civil Division. Later, he continued his service with Fort Wayne Community Schools as a Custodian and Engineer. In every position he held, David carried himself with integrity, humility, and quiet leadership.
Outside of his work, David found great joy in the outdoors. He loved gardening and tending to his flower beds and fishing. In his younger years, he had a deep love for farming, often happiest driving a tractor on his family’s small farm. He enjoyed square dancing, fellowship with friends, and was known for his hearty appreciation of a good meal.
Above all, David was a humble and godly man. His faith was the foundation of his life. David was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and loved to sing hymns. His gentle spirit, servant’s heart, and steadfast trust in the Lord were evident to all who knew him.
David will be remembered for his faithful service, his love of family and community, and the quiet strength of his Christian witness.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Hieber; children, David (Aimee) Hieber, Julie (William) Burdine, Steven (Gina) Hieber, Joshua (Lisa) Hieber; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and brother; Jerry (Irene) Hieber. David was preceded in death by his siblings, Donna Shuler, Bill Fark, Ray Fark, Nancy Fark, Michael Hieber and Geraldine Grover.
A Celebration of David’s Life will be 11 am, Monday, February 23, 2026 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 7710 E. State Street, with calling from 9 am until the service.
