Obituary

Dan L. Boen, Ph.D., HSPP, 75, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on November 22, 2025, surrounded by his family. Dan was a beloved and trusted long-time Christian psychologist serving the Fort Wayne and Auburn communities.

Dan was born on August 13, 1950, in Dayton, Ohio, to Marvin and Jean (Bogard) Boen. He grew up in the Dayton area in a home where faith and family were central foundations that shaped the rest of his life.

He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology in 1972 from Huntington College (now Huntington University). During his time at Huntington, he met the love of his life,  Jennifer (Beebe) Boen, from near Cissna Park, Illinois. They married on December 19, 1970.  During his college years, Dan traveled with several ministry music teams, played soccer, and was active in many student organizations.

He completed a master's degree in clinical psychology at the University of Saint Francis and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Purdue University, West Lafayette, followed by an internship at Iowa State University.

Dan served as a psychologist for more than four decades, with the majority of his years spent in his own practice, Christian Counseling Centers of Indiana/Auburn Christian Counseling Center. He faithfully served those in need, offering care to individuals, couples, families, pastors, and ministry leaders. He found immense joy in helping individuals and couples with gentle, honest, hopeful counseling, grounded in Scriptural truths, while using sound therapeutic principles.

He was an active member of Pathway Community Church in Fort Wayne and was grateful for every opportunity to guide people to Jesus. He was a church Life Group leader in his and Jennifer's home. A voracious reader of everything from the Bible and Christian books to the New York Times and Psychology Today, he often read three to four books a week. He also served on the Old Brook Farm Neighborhood Association for more than a decade.

Next to his relationship with Christ, Dan's greatest priority was his family. He was a faithful, loving husband and father. He was the family encourager and joke teller, gave a nickname to every child and grandchild, and could be counted on to offer advice to family only if they asked.

He nurtured and treasured a close relationship with each family member, spending time one-on-one, taking individual grandkids on trips, and having frequent breakfasts or lunches with his adult children. He prayed daily for each one.  His wry humor was a hallmark trait witnessed by most everyone who knew him.

When he wasn't counseling or with family, Dan enjoyed watching Purdue sports, particularly basketball, Cincinnati Reds games, and doing jigsaw puzzles.

Dan is survived by his wife, Jennifer; his children, Erin (Brian) Heck, Shauna (Daniel) Simpson, and Ian (Stephanie) Boen; his grandchildren, Christian (Amy) Simpson, Meagan (Mike) Rubio, Lara Simpson, Anna Heck, Amanda Heck, Lilly Boen, Chloe Boen, and Jackson Boen; and his great-grandchildren, Weston and Aurelia Rubio. He is also survived by his mother, Jean Boen; his sisters, Diane (Randy) Schwanke, Donna Boen, and his sister-in-law, Elsa (Dennis) Boen; and many extended family members who could count on his witty humor at every gathering. He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Boen, and his brother, Dennis Boen.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, and for one hour (9-10am) prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service on Saturday, Nov. 29, all at Pathway Community Church, 1010 Carroll Road, Fort Wayne, 46845. Burial to follow at Perry Township Cemetery, 802 West Cedar Canyon Road.
