Carol Scherer of Fort Wayne, Indiana, went home to the Lord surrounded by her family on March 4, 2026. She was born in Avon Lake, Ohio, on September 4, 1932, and graduated in 1950 from Rocky River High School in Rocky River, Ohio.
At age 18, Carol married the love of her life, Albert E. Scherer, on October 20, 1950. During the early years of their marriage, Al served in the military and they were based in Newport News, Virginia. Carol and Al later welcomed a daughter and a son and shared many happy years together until Al’s untimely passing in 1981.
Carol was the first female Rotarian in Fulton County, Ohio, and was President of the Delta, Ohio Women’s Club. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years and served on the Central Committee of the Northwest Ohio Republican Party. For two decades, Carol was Director of the Delta Public Library in Delta, Ohio, and 15 years as Director of the Churubusco Public Library in Churubusco, Indiana.
In later years, Carol was an active member of Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She faithfully dedicated her time in many capacities over the years, especially with the women’s groups in her churches. Carol was Vice President of her Delta, Ohio church congregation, was a Luther League advisor, as well as President of Northwest Ohio Synodical Women and President of Maumee Valley Women’s Conference.
In her younger years, Carol volunteered as troop leader for the Findlay, Ohio Camp Fire Girls as well as the Rainbow Girls, Delta, Ohio. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing and competed throughout the United States. An avid traveler, Carol visited many destinations across the United States and Europe, including Germany, England, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, and Amsterdam.
Carol will be fondly remembered for her deep patriotism, many lifelong friendships, and love of reading and playing bridge. She faithfully attended her high school class reunions and annually hosted family Christmas cookie parties. She also cherished the companionship of her many beloved pets.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Pearl Thompson; her sister, Barbara; her brother-in-law, Hal Bechtel; and her beloved husband, Al.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Jerry) Tedrow of Delta, Ohio; her son, Dan (Lana) Scherer of Fort Wayne, Indiana; four grandchildren: Jeremy Tedrow, Matt Tedrow (Mike Boivin), Alan Scherer (fiancée Laura Cook), and Allison Scherer; and her great-granddaughter, Gianna Garritano. Carol is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 20, 2026. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. in the campus chapel. Refreshments will follow immediately afterward in the Heritage Room. All services will take place at Lutheran Life Villages, 6701 South Anthony Boulevard, Fort Wayne, Indiana. A private burial will take place in Delta, Ohio, on March 21, 2026.
