Carol Marie (Amling) Berning, 95, of Fort Wayne passed away peacefully Sunday evening, November 23, 2025 at Lutheran Life Villages at Inverness. She was surrounded by the love and presence of her children throughout the day and evening. Carol was born in Olympia, WA and was the daughter of a Lutheran minister and valued her Christian upbringing. She grew up in Santa Ana, CA where her family operated several greenhouses growing roses. She was honored to have a rose named for her called the "Carol Amling Rose". Carol traveled across the country to attend Valparaiso University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. More importantly, she met the love of her life, Bill Berning, while sitting next to him in biology class. Carol was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She was an avid reader and loved to work crossword puzzles. Carol and Bill enjoyed many summers at Clear Lake, IN where they cherished quality family time.
Carol is survived by her sister; Eunice Dexter, her daughter; Lee Ann Berning, Rita LeFavour, sons; William (Nancy) Berning and Mark (Krista) Berning. Grandchildren; Megan (Chad) Olson, Katherine (Chris) Marlin, Jaclyn (Lewis) Woods, Gwen (Kyle) Frane and Samantha (Ryan) Brimmer. Great-grandchildren; Reagan, Erin and Barrett Olson, Esther and Caleb Marlin, Adrianna Woods, Calvin Brimmer and Henry Frane. Carol's family extends loving appreciation to Lutheran Life Villages at Inverness and Elios Hospice Care.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Pauline Amling, husband, Bill and sister Gloria Carmichael.
Funeral services will take place on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 10:30am with visitation beginning at 9:00am at FairHaven Funeral Home, 6557 N. Clinton Street, Fort Wayne, IN. Burial will follow at Concordia Cemetery Gardens.
Preferred memorials in Carol's honor may be directed to Worship Anew or Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
