Berta (Waynick) Detmers-Doty, 91, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, peacefully entered the loving arms of her Savior on August 10, 2026, surrounded by family.
Born January 3, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, Berta was the daughter of Bertie Waynick and Annie Lucille Hayes. She grew up in Warren, Michigan, and later made Fort Wayne her home.
Berta’s strong faith was a defining part of who she was. She openly shared her love for Jesus and the Gospel with anyone and everyone—whether they wanted to hear it or not. She was loving, nurturing, generous, and known for her quick wit, her love of gardening and birdwatching, and her famous reminders to eat your protein and get your vitamin C. Earlier in life, she enjoyed crocheting and knitting, especially knitting slippers for anyone who wanted a pair.
Berta was the matriarch and glue of her family. She leaves behind her four children, Brandt (Kelli) Detmers, Becky (Dean) Rapp, Kyle (Cari) Detmers, and Jaason (Jody) Detmers; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Her place at the center of her family will never be filled, but her love will remain woven through the generations she leaves behind.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four siblings; and her first husband, Larry Detmers. Her second husband, Tom Doty, whom she married in 2007, passed away just 13 hours after Berta.
Berta’s family takes comfort knowing that the woman who spent her life pointing others toward Jesus is now at peace in His presence.
A funeral service will take place on Monday August 17, 2026, at 3 pm, located at Fellowship Missionary Church (2536 E. Tillman, Fort Wayne, IN 46816) with calling from 1 pm until the service. A private burial at Lindenwood Cemetery will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be given to Fellowship Missionary Church.
