Barrie L. Peterson, age 83, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a profound legacy of faith, family, and mentorship.
Born on August 11, 1942, in Moline, Illinois, Barrie was the beloved son of Virgil and June Peterson. On August 31, 1963, he married the love of his life, Judy (Anderson) Peterson. Together, they shared over 62 years of unwavering devotion, deep love, and partnership, creating a beautiful foundation for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A legendary figure in the Indiana educational and sports community, Barrie dedicated over 50 years of his life to teaching and coaching. While he spent the majority of his storied career shaping lives at Northrop High School, his impact vibrated across the region through his work at IPFW, Concordia High School, Indiana Tech, and Angola High School. His excellence on the track, cross-country courses, and in classrooms earned him a well-deserved place as a Hall of Fame coach. Yet, to Barrie, his greatest accolades weren’t the medals or the titles; it was the thousands of young lives he mentored, motivated, and inspired to walk with integrity.
Beyond his public legacy, Barrie was a man of deep, lived faith and character. He was a faithful husband, an endlessly supportive father, a caring brother, and a proud grandfather. He led by example, teaching his family that God and family are what truly matter most, and that grace and forgiveness should be offered freely to all.
Barrie was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and June Peterson, and his beloved son, Jeffrey J. Peterson.
He is survived by his beautiful wife, Judy Peterson of Fort Wayne, IN; his brothers, Jon (Carolyn) Peterson of Moline, IL, and Rick (Jenny) Peterson of Yuma, AZ; his children, Michael (Kyrie) Hernandezpeterson of Fort Wayne, IN, Bradley Peterson of Indianapolis, IN, and daughter-in-law, Angie Peterson (Jeff’s widow) of Fort Wayne, IN.
He is the cherished grandfather of Shane (Brittni) Peterson, Luke Peterson, Taylor Peterson (Marcus Chezum), Juaniko Hernandezpeterson, and Mykal Hernandezpeterson, all of Fort Wayne; Hudson (Sam) Gaunt of Indianapolis; and Justin Applegate (Tia Carpenter-McElvain) of Wausau, WI. He is also the adored great-grandfather of Caspian, Ellianna Mae, August, Cash, and Wright Jeffrey.
Though his chair remains empty, his strong embrace, his lessons on hard work, and his spirit will forever remain full in the hearts of those he loved.
