Obituary

Allen R. Lauer, Sr, 84 of Fort Wayne, Indiana passed away on June 19, 2025. He was born January 10, 1941 in Cannelton, Indiana.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Nell Lauer and his brother George "Melvin" Lauer (Norma). He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jeanette "Jean" Lauer, his children Allen Lauer, Jr (Laura), Rodney Lauer (Heather), Melinda Lowry (Eric), his grandchildren Julia Lauer, Anthony Lauer (Joanna), Christina Lauer, Kelsey Lauer (Nick), Susanna Lauer, Jacqueline Lauer, Shawn Lowry, Micheala Lowry and 11 great grandchildren. He said being a letter carrier for 31 years was his best career decision. Throughout his life he was known for his advocacy especially for seniors for which he received many awards including the Circle of Corydon in 2019. This award recognizes his community advocacy throughout the state of Indiana and is the highest award an Indiana resident can receive for service. In his spare time he enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, being with family, IU basketball, politics and the PBS News Hour.

He moved to Fort Wayne, IN in 1958 and graduated from North Side High School in 1959. He served in the United States Air Force from September 1960 to June 1965 where he received the US Air Force Outstanding Unit Citation. He was hired by the USPS as a City Letter Carrier in May 1967. He was a MDA volunteer through  the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) who sorted all the pledges for mailing to donors. He served as local union president for the Summit City Branch 116, NALC from January 1982 through December 1993. He was a Gold Card member of the NALC, Branch 116 signifying more than 50 years of membership. He served as the United States Postal Service Legislative Advocate since 1974. He served on the Indiana State Association of Letter Carriers Board for 25 years, 6 of which he was president. He served 6 years on the Board of Directors for United Senior Action of Indiana, 2 of those as State President. He served as president of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) local chapter #223 since January 1998. He served as the NARFE State Legislative Chair for State and Federal Legislative Issues for 8 years.  He served on the Senior Advisory Council for Area 3 Aging and In Home Services from 2008. He started and continued coordinating the NALC, Branch 116 Food Drive benefiting The Associated Churches. He volunteered with Youth For Christ for 10 years. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and those who worked alongside throughout the state.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at 1:00 pm with visitation one hour prior at Fairhaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services (6557 N. Clinton Street, Fort Wayne, IN 46825). Visitation will also be on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Associated Churches Food Bank, NARFE Alzheimer's Research, and Muscular Dystrophy Association.
