Alice Marjean (Jay) Hare, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Alice was born February 9,1933 in White County, IN to Arthur and Mamie Johnsonbaugh Jay.
She attended Monticello, IN schools and, after raising her four children, she completed her education at North White High School in Monon, IN. Alice managed the Pizza King in Monticello for 22 years. There she developed many long-term friendships with customers and employees.
Alice’s longest friendship was with her Northern Ireland pen pal, Myrtle Moan. Their friendship began when they were both in seventh grade and continued through their lives. Their families visited each other several times in Northern Ireland and in America.
Many remember Alice teaching leather craft in 4-H and was active in Boy Scouts for thirty-three years. Alice enjoyed attending Pious Chapel Church and Pike Creek Church of the Brethren before she moved to Fort Wayne, IN in 2017.
Alice was married to Gordon Hare for 25 years. Her survivors include children Victor Hare (Carole Carey) and Kathy Price (Gene); daughters-in-law Linda Hare and Rose Hare; grandchildren Brian Kay (Nicole), Kevin Kay (Amy), Becky Hakey (Chris), Jesse Hare (Kristine) and Samanthia Hare (Brian Belongia); great-grandchildren Madeline, Gavin, Jaxon and Emerson Kay; Allison and Devin Wade; George Kay, Ariella and Austin Hakey.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, brother Russell Jay (Dorothea) (Peg), four sisters Clara Watterson (Noble), Frances Barnes (Charles), Verginia Overfield (Tim) and Elsie Jay as well as her sons Anthony "Tony" Hare and Karl Hare, son-in-law Craig Kay and great-grandsons Griffin and Jacob Kay.
Alice suffered from dementia spending her last three years in a nursing home. She loved cats and felt that everyone needed one.
A Celebration of Alice’s Life will be 12 noon on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at FairHaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton Street, with calling one hour prior. Interment will be Sunday, August 2, 2026 at 12 noon at Pike Creek Cemetery, 7047 E. 175 N. Monticello, Indiana.
