Obituary

Alfred "Al" Gordon Reed, age 86, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

Born in Scottsboro, Alabama, Al was the son of the late Alfred R. and Berta V. (James) Reed. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1965, achieving the rank of Airman First Class.

While stationed in Battle Creek, Michigan, Al met the love of his life, Darlene Cox. They were married on September 15, 1963, and together built a beautiful marriage of 62 years. Al began his career in the communications department with General Electric in Minnesota. His career later took the family to Cincinnati, before settling in Fort Wayne in 1977. After retiring from GE, Al and Darlene spent 20 years working side by side at the Memorial Coliseum, where he enjoyed the chance to meet new people each day.

A true people person, Al loved good conversations and took joy in planning family vacations in great detail, then seeing them come to life. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as an usher, and took part in Bible studies and potluck gatherings. Al was also a member of Leo Lodge #224 F.& A.M., where he valued the fellowship and traditions of the Masonic order.

Though he claimed few hobbies, Al was a loyal sports fan, cheering passionately for both the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Detroit Lions.  Al was able to take Honor Flight #48 to see the memorials of all the veterans.

Surviving are his devoted wife, Darlene Reed; children, Gregory (Traci) Reed and DeeAnn Reed; grandchildren, Victoria "Tori" Reed and Gabrielle "Gabi" (Zachary) Rexroad; great-grandchild, Aspen Rexroad; and his beloved cats, McGee and Abby. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert "Roy" Reed and Betty Jean Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at FairHaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton Street , with calling beginning at 2:00 p.m. A Masonic Service will take place at 5:30 p.m., with Air Force Honors to follow the service.

Memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church, Leo Masonic Lodge #224, or Humane Fort Wayne.  The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Heartland Home Healthcare and Hospice as well as Kingston at Dupont for their care and professionalism to Al during his time of need.
