Adam Christopher Gates died peacefully on June 15, 2025, at Stillwater Hospice in Fort Wayne, Ind. He was born August 22, 1972, in Columbus, Ohio, and welcomed by loving parents Douglas and Carol (Culbertson) Gates.
Adam had a sweet and gentle soul and was always the first one to offer a helpful hand. He was outgoing, friendly, and kind, with a great smile and wonderful sense of humor that gained him many friends during his entire lifetime.
A roofer by trade, he took great pride in a job well done. If he didn't know how to fix something, he'd do his best to figure it out.
He was a lover of animals and enjoyed watching the birds at the feeder or the antics of the squirrels that he fed peanuts. He especially favored cats and spent time volunteering at Stop The Over Population of Pets (STOP), a cat shelter in Mansfield, Ohio, where he adopted his beloved Freddie. In school he loved music, art, and sports, excelling as a city-wide year-round soccer player.
He was a man of faith. His biggest desire was to honor God in his daily walk. His life verse was Joshua 1:9. He learned it in kindergarten when his mom was his teacher at Worthington Christian School and they often said it together over the years during their frequent phone calls.
His greatest joy was spending time with his family, whom he loved fiercely.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Donald F. and Cleo M. (Arnold) Gates and Hal and Esther (Tindale) Culbertson.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, Douglas and Elizabeth Gates, Warsaw, Ind.; mother and stepfather, Carol and William Allen, Sandusky, Ohio; sister and brother-in-law, Angie and James Williams, Bellevue, Ohio; daughter and her husband, Destiny and Ryan Barron, Butlerville, Ohio; grandson, Devon Barron; niece and her husband, Kailee and Brandon Freundner, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; nephew and his wife, Zachary and Cassy Kleinschmidt, Sandusky, Ohio; two great nieces; a great nephew; and many cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to STOP Animal Shelter and Spay/Neuter Clinic, 1152 Lexington Ave., Mansfield, OH 45907.
Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery, 116 South Gamble Street, Shelby, Ohio, where a graveside service, led by Pastor Jason Carmean, will be held at 10:30 a.m., July 26, 2025. A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 23, 2025, at The Hub at Winona Lake Grace Church, 1200 Kings Highway, Winona Lake, Ind.
